The Snake River Chapter Says Goodbye

By the end of November 2011, the Snake River Chapter will be closed. Without leadership to carry the chapter forward, we must close the chapter.

Snake River members are encouraged to consider joining the Utah-STC chapter. Utah-STC has many virtual events that can be attended without a car trip to the Salt Lake City area.

Our website and e-mail addresses will be available for a few more months. Many thanks to SolutionPro for hosting our domain for several years.

Please contact me at president at stc-src.org with your questions and comments.

Join us! Friday and Saturday, July 8 and 9

On Friday, July 8, we'll have a lunch meeting with an overview of DITA (Darwin Information Typing Architecture) and how you can use it. This meeting is free and open to the public; location is Fuddrucker's on Eagle Road near Ustick. I have reserved their side room, which will allow better conversations. Burgers start at $5, veggie options are available, and there are no waiters to tip. The presentation will start at 12:20; arrive early to place your order and start networking.
RSVP to president@stc-src.org so I can save you a seat at the lunch.
On Saturday, July 9, we'll have a seminar from 9 am to noon on creating information in DITA and using DITA tools. This event is free for STC members and a mere $15 for non-members. Bring your own laptop. We will meet at Boise State University in Liberal Arts room 204. If you park in the nearby Admin Bldg. lot, we will reimburse your parking.
Seminar topics:
  • Modular writing
  • Introduction to DITA topics
  • Adapting unstructured content to DITA
  • Reusing content
  • Publishing to PDF and HTML
To reserve your spot, send e-mail to president@stc-src.org.

Our presenter for both meetings is Dr. Carlos Evia, associate professor of professional writing at Virginia Tech. He frequently teaches DITA to undergraduate and graduate students. Dr. Evia holds a master's degree in computer science and a Ph.D. in technical communication and rhetoric.

Successful Lunch Meeting on Wednesday, April 20, 12–1 pm

Almost 20 people joined us on April 20. We enjoyed lively conversation in a lively (and loud!) restaurant. Thanks to everyone who came out.

It is clear that there is support for a group in the Treasure Valley that supports technical writers. Whether that group is an STC chapter or something else remains to be seen. The valley is big enough for two complementary groups.

To help chart the course for our local STC chapter, please contact Russell via president at stc-src.org. We need new officers to move forward!

The Snake River Chapter, STC was formed in June of 1990 to serve technical communicators throughout the southwestern portion of Idaho and the eastern part of Oregon. Our eastern border extends to Idaho Falls, Idaho, while our western border extends to Ontario, Oregon.

Since that time, our membership has waned. Cutbacks in employer support, furlough days, and increased reliance on offshore labor have hit our local technical writers hard. Of the last group of officers to be elected by the chapter, only the president remains.

I do get occasional inquiries about chapter activities, and I will be happy to set something up if I get the sense that the chapter will support it.

We will hold chapter elections in June 2011; nominations for officers are due by May. We need new officers to lead the chapter forward.

If we do not have a new set of officers elected by June 2011, I will recommend to STC that the chapter be dissolved. After two years of very low membership, perhaps the time has come.

On the other hand, this provides a great opportunity for anyone wanting to strengthen the technical-communicator community in the Boise area.
