From the President

This time of year always seems fraught with changes—trying to get in shape (physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually), vowing to give back to the community, promising to manage time more effectively, etc. This past month has seen several changes that affect the chapter.

Council Changes

The chapter has had some changes in the past month. Kay Wingert was unable to continue in her role as chapter secretary, so Sarah Harris has graciously volunteered to step in and finish Kay's term. Alaina Eldrege has resigned as program manager, and hence as next year's president. We appreciate the efforts Alaina has made this year to bring interesting and informative programs to the chapter, and we are sorry to see her go. This leaves a vacancy in both programs and in the presidency for next year. Please contact me if you are interested in stepping into the program manager role for the rest of the year (this does not commit you to being president).

Programs for the Rest of the Year

We have some great programs scheduled for the rest of this year!

  • Feb 8: Johnna Johnson is speaking on "Mastering Your Life Through Mastering Your Time"
  • Mar 8: The awards banquet. Come and support your colleagues in a fun-filled evening.
  • Apr 12: Carey Shoufler is speaking on Instructional & Performance Technology
  • May: no meeting; STC Annual Conference in Las Vegas, NV
  • June 14: BBQ/picnic

Check out the chapter Web site to find out the details.

How You Can Help

This chapter, like most professional organizations, depends on its members to keep running and to provide the educational and professional opportunities that members need and want. However, it seems that the same small group of people ends up doing everything year after year, until they get burned out. Let's change that in this chapter-if everyone pitches in, even to do just a small task, you will gain opportunities to get to know your colleagues better, learn skills that you might not have the opportunity to learn on the job, and will keep the chapter a viable and vital link to the larger professional community.

We have the following volunteer needs:

  • Program Manager: sets up the room for the meeting, picks up the snacks, contacts the speakers, and sends the thank-you note afterwards. (Time: 5-10 hours/month, less if the program committee helps with tasks)
  • Officers for next year: run for office and then lead the chapter through next year. It's time to start thinking about running for a position on the STC-SRC administrative council. The time commitment varies by position, but is in the 5-10 hours/month range.
  • eLearning workshop manager: works with ASTD and STC chapter councils to plan, develop, and hold a 1-day elearning workshop in September 2006. This person leads a committee of 5-10 volunteers who will take care of the logistics of putting on the workshop. (Time: 10-12 hours/month)
  • eLearning workshop committee: perform a variety of jobs, such as registration, public relations, speaking, programming, catering, venue setup, treasurer, etc. (Time: varies by job)

I look forward to hearing from each of you about what volunteer opportunities you would like to participate in.
