Advances in Education Initiative

STC is working towards providing more education options than ever before. Members have asked for a variety of types of education and resources and we are responding to that request.

Training Program

The STC Training Program will pilot on Oct. 20-21, 2005. Attendees will receive a certificate of completion for taking a course. After the pilot program, we will look at scheduling similar training programs at other locations.

The pilot program consists of the following two-day course offerings:

  • Creating and Using Personas to Improve Usability
    Instructor: Whitney Quesenbery
  • Focusing on Content: Making Web Sites Work for Users
Instructors: Ginny Redish and Caroline Jarrett
  • Leadership in Information Management: Developing the Business Framework and Implementation Roadmap for Single Sourcing, Content Management, and Knowledge Management
    Instructor: Rosaline Tsai
  • The Architecture of Content
    Instructor: Jonathan Price
  • XML: From Hand-coding to WYSIWYG Authoring
    Instructor: Neil Perlin

Registration fees, which include two breakfasts and two luncheons, are:

  • Member with hotel accommodations*: $1,295
  • Nonmember with hotel accommodations*: $1,455
  • Member without hotel accommodations: $1,095
  • Nonmember without hotel accommodations: $1,255

More information will be sent to members shortly and will appear on the STC web site. Stay tuned!

Experts List

Community leaders are always looking for program speakers, authors for newsletter articles, seminar and training leaders, and so on. This list, which will be published on the STC web site, will provide a resource for meeting these needs.

The initial list will consist of the top-rated speakers at past STC Annual Conferences, along with their contact information and the topic on which they spoke. We are investigating including a second list of individuals who are certified to teach a particular tool or topic. More news about these lists will be sent to community leaders and will appear on the STC web site.

Education Portal

Another initiative is to centralize all of STC’s educational offerings on the web site in one, easy-to-access portal. The web site currently includes a wealth of information. This initiative will leverage the existing content, provide new content (for example, the lists mentioned earlier), and provide a new framework for accessing it.

Leadership Training

Every community leader has a slightly different set of experiences and skills when entering their STC “job.” And, there are surely skills and knowledge they wish they had as they serve in their leadership role. Leadership Day at the Annual Conference provides a wonderful opportunity for leaders to meet with each other, share experiences, and learn from veterans. But, it happens only once a year. And, it doesn’t cover everything that a leader might encounter.

Leadership Training will fill the gaps during the course of the year. We will survey leaders to determine what they wish they had known, how they would like to receive the training (webinars, phone seminars, and so on), and whether they would be willing to provide training and mentorship for others.

Some ideas for topics include:

  • Fiscal management
  • Recruiting and managing volunteers
  • Holding a conference
  • Recruiting and retaining members
  • Creating positive team dynamics
  • Delegating for results
  • Improving interpersonal skills
  • Making change work for you
  • Networking for results
  • Effective communication skills
  • Succession planning
  • Keeping senior members active

Leaders, keep your eye out for that survey. Your input is critical in making this a success!

Continuing Education Units (CEUs)

We are researching the possibility of offering CEUs for attendance at Annual Conference sessions, post-conference sessions, and training program courses. We do not yet have the data on the logistics, requirements, and associated expenses (staff to monitor attendance, equipment to track attendance, and so on), so we do not know whether this is feasible, but we are looking into it.

In determining whether to go forward with this, we will survey STC members who identify themselves as managers to determine their perceived value of CEUs. For example, will a candidate having CEUs impact their decision to hire them? Would they be more likely to pay to send an employee to a conference or training program that offers CEUs as opposed to one that does not?

Once we have all of the information, including a budget of associated expenses, we will present it to the Board for consideration. Again, stay tuned!

Your Turn

This is just the start of what STC can offer in education, but we need to know what you want. Dream big. Send your ideas to Deborah Sauer, assistant to the president for conferences, at dsauer@sauer-design.com. Together, we can make a better STC.
