Member Profile: Barb Helling

This month's profile is Barb Helling. Like many technical communicators in the Treasure Valley, she has been affected by the ongoing restructuring effort at Hewlett-Packard. After 28 years at HP, she took advantage of their voluntary severance offer earlier this summer. She has used the opportunity to start a business named Bryden Canyon Communications, which provides technical editing and writing and e-learning design and development services.

When asked what she finds most interesting and challenging about the technical communication profession, she replies, "This is a great time to be involved in technical communication because it touches many disciplines and continues to evolve as technology advances."

Barb's positions at HP ranged from administrative assistant to database specialist to documentation project manager. She has B.A. in English and secondary education from NNU. This past spring, she received an M.S. in instructional and performance technology from BSU.

Barb enjoys reading, traveling, gardening, and attending her two sons' high school and sports events (band, lacrosse, and golf). She has volunteered to be the chapter's competition manager for the upcoming year, so be sure to say hello when you see her at our upcoming meetings.
