Call for Judges
The Snake River Chapter of the STC invites you to apply
to become a judge for our 2005 competition.
We are seeking approximately 50 qualified technical communicators to
judge our 2005 competition. The success of our competition relies on our
judges, and we invite you to apply. We are seeking judges for these categories:
- Technical publications
- Technical art (online and physical media)
- Online technical communication
- Best of Show judges
Why become a judge?
- Judging provides an opportunity to see diverse forms of technical
communication, which could stimulate new ideas for your own work.
- Judging provides a way to become involved in your local STC chapter
and meet other technical communication professionals.
- Judging provides an avenue to share your knowledge with others, so
technical communication continues to evolve and improve.
Who is eligible?
Qualified candidates meet two or more of the following criteria:
- Degree in technical communication, graphic arts or design, or a related
field
- Three or more years working in technical communication
- Teaching experience in communication, graphic arts or design, or a
related field
- Previous winner in another STC competition
- Previous experience as a judge in another STC competition
- Certification by a communication-related professional organization
- STC member
What type of commitment is required?
- Judges attend an orientation meeting during the first week of November
where they receive training and guidelines for judging. During this
meeting, judges in the physical-media art and technical publications
competitions receive the entries they will judge.
- Judges in the online communication competition meet again on Saturday,
December 3 to judge all entries as a team and form a consensus. Allow
most of the day for this activity.
- Judges in the technical art competition meet in early December for
consensus judging. The length of time required depends on the number
of entries.
- Judges in the technical publications competition have approximately
one month to evaluate the entries, working individually. These judges
meet again in early December for consensus judging. Consensus judging
requires about three hours, or one evening, to complete.
- Best of Show judges meet following the consensus judging to determine
if any entries qualify for the Best of Show award.
